GCLC is proud to announce a new program on CAN TV

“The Clinic has a rich history of community outreach,” said GCLC Executive Director Adam Salzman, of the organization’s newest public information project, Legal Aid Explained. “The goal is to help people impacted by disinvestment and discrimination learn about their rights.”

Legal Aid Explained will air once a month on the Chicago area public access television network, Chicago Access Network Television (CAN TV). The program will feature conversations with attorneys, activists, and policy makers about civil legal issues, access to justice, and available resources for those impacted.

It will air on the last Wednesday of the month from 5:00 to 5:30pm on CAN TV Channel 21.

The program represents an expansion of the Clinic’s partnership with CAN TV. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Clinic attorney Ina Winston hosted Immigration Issues, a show that focused on making complex legal and administrative matters related to immigration understandable and accessible.

For the inaugural episode of the new program, Salzman interviewed Winston about her career in public service.

With Legal Aid Explained, Salzman will broaden the scope to cover a range of civil legal issues.

“For decades, CAN TV has offered accessible, community-based programming on a range of issues,” Salzman continued. “It provides a unique platform for educational and community-building conversations.”

GCLC Board Member, Sufyan Sohel, is also a member of CAN TV’s Board of Directors. Sohel recently launched his own weekly program, Change Agents, which “places a spotlight on critical issues impacting Chicago’s communities and introduce[s] viewers to nonprofit and community organizations who are working to address and combat social issues.” It can be seen on Thursdays at 7:00pm on channel 19 or under CAN TV’s “Signature Programs.”

“Today’s news continually focuses on the problems in our society, yet there are so many incredible organizations doing important work to address these issues,” said Sohel. “Through Change Agents, I want to provide a platform to spotlight and share their efforts. I hope to energize fellow Chicagoans: to show that we can all do some good - and be change agents - in our own ways.”

Two episodes of Legal Aid Explained have already been released, featuring Ina Winston, supervisory attorney, and Joel Stopka, managing attorney, of GCLC’s Immigration Law Program. They are available for viewing on CAN TV’s YouTube channel.

Going forward, the show will air on the last Wednesday of every month from 5:00 to 5:30pm. It can be streamed from CAN TV Channel 21 or viewed at a later time on YouTube. Search “Legal Aid Explained” under “CAN TV Nonprofit Services.”

Adam Salzman and Zhulmira Paredes, Managing Director of GCLC’s Domestic Relations Program, discuss the legal resources available in Cook County specifically for survivors of domestic violence.

Adam Salzman and Jeff Whitehead, Supervisory Attorney of the Homelessness Advice and Representation Program (HARP), discuss the program’s first year and what a typical clinic session looks like for clients.
